A new program began in August and runs through May, introducing rural North Dakota high school students to firefighting through virtual classes and in-person drills. The Central Regional Area Career and Technical Center leads the course, with equipment and support from the North Dakota Firefighters Association. Coursework meets weekly online during a free period and aligns with state training standards for adult recruits during hands-on training.
This year, 17 students from 10 rural schools are enrolled. Organizers hope a second section will launch next year to help students earn industry certification and assist at local fire departments. Participants come from communities across the state, from the Minot area to Scranton and South Heart.
