Lawton, OK — The Lawton Fire Department kicked off its eight-week Citizens Fire Academy with an overview at the Public Safety Building, inviting residents to see firefighting from the inside. Deputy Fire Marshal Anthony Garibay leads the effort, which has taken a decade to reach this stage, offering 17 participants hands-on exposure to fire suppression, EMS basics, rescue. The opening night included a tour of Fire Station 1 to highlight taxpayer investments in the department’s facilities, including new Public Building. Participants vary—from those seeking knowledge to those who may pursue firefighting experiences—some with ties to the department. Rebecca Cooper, whose grandson and a retired firefighter are connected to the station, said she wants to understand operations behind the scenes, including costs and logistics. Garibay emphasized the program educates and engages the community while showcasing the department’s capabilities. Over eight weeks, expect more tours and hands-on learning.
