Capt. II Andy Ruiz, who leads the Los Angeles Fire Department’s In-Service Training Unit, discusses how LAFD is rooted in training. Recruits begin at the site of a firefighter’s line-of-duty death at the department’s academy. The LAFD manages in-service training across 468 square miles at four sites, plus the Frank Hotchkins Fire Academy.
Ruiz describes responses to several recent close-call incidents that left firefighters seriously injured, including adoption of fire behavior studies from UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute and the IAFF. The department launched local training to ensure firefighters are current on the latest threats, with examples of how proper training has avoided critical injuries.
