Before the old Sea Island Apartments disappear from Ribaut Road, local firefighters from northern Beaufort County used the vacant Port Royal complex for hands-on training ahead of its demolition for a new VA outpatient clinic. The nine single-story brick buildings date to 1948 and sit at 1844 Ribaut Road.
Known as acquired structure training, it allows practice in a demolished setting, including breaking windows, forcing entry and roof work. Crews also rehearsed hose management and vertical ventilation.
Firefighters from several departments, including City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal and nearby facilities, participated. Access was arranged through the contractor for about two weeks in August.
The site will be cleared for an approximately $30 million VA community-based outpatient clinic, built by VM Port Royal LLC with Ryan Construction.
