The Cal Fire Atwater Training Center, at the former Castle Air Force Base, is one of four Cal Fire training centers in California. It was established to grow the agency and align training with state and national standards.
The center runs firefighter 1 and firefighter 2 academies for employees across Cal Fire, aiming to convert them to permanent staff and support promotions, in line with SB 581.
The firefighter 1 academy lasts six weeks with testing; firefighter 2 lasts four weeks. Lodging and meals are provided as training runs weekdays, with a mix of physical work, hands-on drills and classroom instruction.
Trainees train with gas-fired props and residential-style rooms to gain structure-fire experience.
