Burton and Sheldon Fire Districts conducted their annual water supply operations training to support firefighting in rural areas of northern Beaufort County where hydrants are scarce. The districts serve large rural areas with few or distant hydrants, so they practice establishing a mobile water supply to sustain a continuous flow during fires.
The departments have preplanned communities lacking adequate hydrants and have an automatic aid agreement to respond together in those areas. A mobile water supply uses portable tanks near the scene, locates a distant water source, and shuttles water back to the portable hydrants.
The week-long training focused on drafting, supplying water, and driver/pump operations, with over 15 hours of hands-on practice over three days.
