Twenty two students from George Elliot Secondary School completed a hands-on firefighter training program in partnership with the Lake Country Fire Department. The academy lasted five months, totaling 100 hours of training and earning the equivalent of a four-credit high school course.
The curriculum blended classroom lessons with practical training in areas including first aid, fire hose deployment, hydrant operations, vehicle fire suppression, auto extrication and wildfire mitigation. Graduates earned Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support certification, B.C. Wildfire Service S-100 certification and a completion certificate from the Lake Country Fire Department Junior Fire Academy.
Officials say graduates are now better prepared to apply for the department’s annual firefighter recruit training program and gain skills valuable for future careers.
