The University of Iowa SIM-IA trailer delivered pre-RAGBRAI simulation training to the Marshalltown area, including Marshalltown Fire Department personnel and UnityPoint EMS staff. The mobile facility features two high-fidelity labs with lifelike mannequins and a control area that provides realistic patient responses.
Trainees included Firefighter JJ Simms and UnityPoint EMS workers Hunter Block and Ryan Wanat, who worked in small groups to assess vitals and stabilize a broken-clavicle mannequin.
Two scenarios were used: a rider from a multi-bike crash with a fractured collarbone (the mannequin is a 25-year-old male named Chris) and a rider with a significant head injury.
SIM-IA Instruction Services Coordinator Dave Lyons said the exercises help responders prepare for the crowds and potential injuries at RAGBRAI.
