Fire season is in full swing in northern Nevada as the Nevada Division of Forestry hosts its annual firefighter training academy. The five-day interagency program brings together rookie and engine crews, teaching the basics from hose lines to brush clearing and chain saw work. The event culminates in a simulated wildfire response that tests teamwork under pressure. Battalion Chief Colleen Lafferty of the Division of Forestry, based in Ely, says the trainees put their newly learned skills to the test, with crews pumping engines, running hose lines uphill, and pulling brush. Since starting in 2014, the academy has trained roughly 550 wildland firefighters, with shifts that can run up to 16 hours to mirror active fire assignments. The program aims to pass along experience from seasoned workers to newer recruits, strengthening communities across northern Nevada. The program remains a cornerstone of regional readiness as seasons lengthen.
