Sixty firefighters participated in a three‑day cancer screening event organized by the Department of Fire Services (DFS) at the Firefighting Academy campus in Bridgewater. The DFS, along with the academy and volunteer vendors, offered a slate of screenings including skin cancer checks, chest CTs, PSA blood tests, mammograms, and ultrasounds for eligible call, volunteer, career, and retired firefighters. Demand was so high that the sessions were extended by a full day to meet the need. State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine emphasized that firefighters face higher cancer risks and that early detection resources are critical to protecting their health and retirement years. Abby Baker of the Firefighting Academy described the screenings as confidential and free of charge to firefighters and their departments. The program’s reach has grown, with more screenings performed than in previous years. Learn more about the Department of Fire Services’ Firefighter Cancer page.
