UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has rolled out a firefighter training course designed to bridge the gap between wildland and urban firefighting. Titled Structure Triage Considerations for Wildland Urban Interface Firefighting, the course draws on research from CAL FIRE, FSRI, IBHS, IAFF, NIST, and NWCG, plus lessons from UL’s Maui wildfire analysis. It tackles how WUI fires threaten environments and how to prioritize defense, suppression, and risk reduction when flames spread from structures to structures. The program emphasizes tactical awareness across wildland and structure-based operations, aiming to better protect communities where urban development meets wildland fuel. UL FSRI notes that current training often treats WUI and brush fires separately, and this course seeks to unify instruction to save lives and property. FSRI and UL Research Institutes position the course as a practical, evidence-based resource for firefighters and fire leaders facing growing WUI risks.
