UL Research Institutes, through its Fire Safety Research Institute, has rolled out a new firefighter training course designed for the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Titled Structure Triage Considerations for Wildland Urban Interface Firefighting, the program builds on research from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, FSRI, the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, IAFF, NIST, and the National Wildfire Coordinating Group, plus insights drawn from UL Research Institutes’ Maui Wildfires Analysis. The course emphasizes how fires behave when structures mingle with vegetation, helping wildland and structural firefighters understand dynamic spread, defend critical exposures, and make tactical decisions under pressure. By focusing on structure-to-structure spread, prioritizing defensive actions, and informing resource allocation, it aims to improve outcomes for communities facing conflagrations. The initiative addresses increasing WUI threats observed nationwide and reflects UL’s mission to advance safety through rigorous science and shared knowledge. A proactive initiative.
