An Oregon program is reshaping how high school seniors chart a firefighting career. The Baker City Fire Department in Baker City launched a cadet program tied to Baker High School, giving students a hands-on path toward firefighting and EMT training. 18-year-old William Spriet, a Baker High senior, is embracing the route, saying he just wants to help people. The cadet program runs weekends for four to six weeks, and cadets 16 and older can ride along on calls. Baker City Fire Chief Michael Carlson says the effort aims to prepare cadets for certification in firefighting and EMT by age 18, with leadership opportunities and community-service roles. The first class graduated with six cadets: Camryn Ayer, Lance Downing, Hayden Churchfield, Taylor Peppers, Mathius Madison and Brennan Robinson. Spriet hopes to pursue college later, perhaps Eastern Oregon University on the Mountaineers’ track, after gaining real-world experience.
