Twenty-six recruits have graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighter Training Program, a milestone for departments. The graduates completed the program at Bridgewater campus of the Department of Fire Services, a schedule designed for professionals who work or study, with nights and weekend sessions since its inception in 2003. More than 3,000 recruits have earned this credential. The 240-hour course covers fire behavior, suppression tactics, public fire safety education, hazardous materials response, and life-saving drills. Graduates must demonstrate competency in life safety, search and rescue, ladder operations, water supply, pump operation, and fire attack across scenarios from small fires to multi-room structures. The Martin H. McNamara Outstanding Student Award was presented to Firefighter Nicholas Sheehan of the Marion Fire Department. The class represents 12 departments, including Acushnet, Dartmouth Fire District 1, 2 and 3, Dighton, Lakeville, Marion, Plympton, Rehoboth, Swansea, West Bridgewater and Westport.
