Sterling Heights’ four-week Civilian Fire Academy starts September 10, giving residents hands-on experience in fire attack, vehicle extrication, technical rescue and CPR, with equipment demonstrations. Space is limited due to interactivity. Graduates may schedule a ride-along at one of the city’s five fire stations. The program is open to residents 18 and older.
Interim Fire Chief Michael Amormino says the academy helps people understand the full scope of the department’s work beyond fires, including medical calls and rescues. The department responds to about 19,000 calls annually. Applications are due September 1; notifications go out September 2.
