This weekend, Butler County hosts the fourth annual Jimmy Ellis Training Weekend, Aug. 13–16, centered at Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry Township. The event honors Cpt. Jimmy Ellis, a longtime firefighter and leader in the local fire service. It is Western Pennsylvania’s largest firefighter education hub, drawing attendees from 16 other states and two from Ontario. Organizers expect about 329 firefighters from Western Pennsylvania, with participants from across the United States and Canada.
The weekend features 27 training classes across 12 sites in Butler and Allegheny counties, five acquired structures and hands-on sessions such as vehicle extrications. Speakers include Candace Ashby, Ray McCormack and Kyle Romagus. Sunday offers a four-hour hot class and a certification for those who complete duties.
