The City of Decatur Fire Department is partnering with Decatur High School’s Career Academy on a firefighter apprenticeship program designed to prepare students for careers in the fire service and address a shortage of applicants.
Through the program, students can earn their firefighter certification while still in high school, effectively shortening training time by about 14 weeks and enabling them to work sooner after graduation.
Participants will complete physical training and hands-on practice as they pursue certification. Decatur firefighters undergo more than 249 hours of training each year.
The department hopes the initiative will help increase staffing and provide a path for students to begin working immediately after high school.
