Ellis County is moving forward with a regional firefighter training facility after commissioners accepted a Patterson Family Foundation grant and dedicated a 10-acre parcel at 1515 W. 55th St., near the county landfill. The foundation has provided about $454,000 toward the project, with planned equipment totaling about $820,000.
A live-fire training tower will be the centerpiece for interior and exterior fires, with second-story scenarios. Equipment includes a flashover simulator, a fire dynamics prop, a forcible-entry training door and a vehicle fire simulator. A 40-by-100-foot building will house equipment and a 40-by-40-foot classroom; volunteers will finish the interior, and HVAC equipment has been donated. The project could serve departments across western Kansas and may host an annual fire school.
