Decatur Fire & Rescue approved a career-development plan that sets minimum training, education and experience requirements for firefighters seeking advancement. The Personnel Board unanimously adopted the plan, with implementation beginning after a 24-month transition. Current rank holders will not be demoted if they do not meet the new requirements for their rank. The goal is a clear career roadmap from a firefighter’s first day to the department’s highest operational rank, and the plan does not replace the existing promotional process.
Requirements build on the system, emphasizing training and development, including basic EMT certification, with encouragement to pursue advanced EMS credentials. Lieutenants must complete instructional and fire-officer courses, and regional training site helps keep classes local and costs down.
