Massachusetts Department of Fire Services expanded firefighter survival training at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow with a mobile SCBA training maze. A mobile SCBA survival unit brings instruction to local departments while recruit training continues at Stow.
It replaces the academy’s original SCBA maze and complements a Springfield-based mobile unit. Inside the maze, firefighters wear full turnout gear and SCBA, navigating dark, confined spaces to improve air management, build confidence under stress, and reinforce search, rescue and self-extrication skills.
State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine says it’s among MFA’s most requested training tools. The project is about $500,000, largely funded by a $435,000 FEMA grant. The MFA has trained thousands over 30 years and continues updating programs with technology.
