Young people in Tifton took part in the Junior Fire Academy led by the Tifton Fire Department. The weeklong program gave teens firefighting experience, including fire safety, equipment training, and rescue operations. Daily sessions covered fire behavior, prevention, extinguishing, and practical work with hoses, ropes, and civilian extraction from a damaged vehicle. The schedule included games, and the final day featured water slides and a graduation ceremony.
James Golden, engineer and academy organizer, reported 16 participants. He said there is interest in expanding the curriculum for returning students. Those who want to continue can join the fire department’s work-based learning program at Tift County High School, offering further study and a path to firefighting after turning 18 and earning certification.
