FireRescue1’s What Firefighters Want survey shows firefighters remain eager to learn and often seek training outside their departments. Across the last five years, 74% attended regional training, 44% state fire academy, 40% vendor or manufacturer programs, and 21% the National Fire Academy; 65% earned at least three certifications.
Motivations to train themselves are high: improving skills (81%) and personal interest (75%) far exceed certification requirements (24%) or internal encouragement (17%).
Barriers to training persist: scheduling conflicts or lack of time (60%), staffing or call coverage (45%), personal or family commitments (37%), limited facilities (33%) and funding or reimbursement (33%).
