Thirteen new firefighters are starting their careers with Volusia County Fire Rescue, announced last week. The New Hire Academy graduating class received helmets and badges during a Friday ceremony.
Volusia County Fire Chief Joe King said the helmets, badges and uniforms symbolize the commitment of the profession, and that the graduates will join the team at their stations, ready to learn from experienced firefighters and answer calls for residents. The graduates celebrated with friends, family, and new colleagues on Friday as academy training concluded; Saturday marked their first day reporting to stations. The academy combines classroom instruction with hands-on training to familiarize trainees with equipment, procedures, and standards they'll use on the front lines in Volusia County.
