The Jimmy Ellis Training Weekend began in 2023 after Ellis died at 49 from complications related to COVID-19. He was a 32-year veteran volunteer firefighter, vice president of the Adams Area Fire District, and a longtime Pittsburgh firefighter and trainer.
In its fourth year, the event has grown from about 60 participants to nearly 330 firefighters from 16 states and Canada.
Friday features lectures, while the weekend emphasizes hands-on training. Five Cranberry homes will be torn down for live exercises, with training at 12 sites across Butler and Allegheny counties.
Classes include truck, engine, rapid intervention, vehicle extrication, and rope rescue, including short-staffed engine operations. Organizers hope to grow the program in coming years.
