Firefighters from Tempe, Mesa, and other East Valley agencies gathered at the Salt River on Tuesday morning for swiftwater rescue training. The annual exercise aims to prepare first responders for water emergencies, whether a river rescue or a flash flood cutting through the city.
The session was led by a Tempe firefighter-paramedic and a Mesa fire captain, who instructed participants as they ran through rescue scenarios. The training underscores the region’s preparation ahead of monsoon season and the risks water can pose to communities in the East Valley.
