Six recruits are spending 16 weeks in Scott County Fire Department’s academy, with fitness, classroom work, and real drills on equipment before they can fight fires or save lives.
Battalion Chief Jeremy Barnett says the department seeks recruits who are eager to learn, have a strong work ethic, and work well with others to ensure teamwork on scene.
Facilities include a training tower for search-and-rescue practice, live-fire trailers, and a brand-new car prop. Repetition builds the muscle memory needed for high-risk, low-frequency tasks.
A maze simulates a building collapse, challenging recruits to navigate in darkness and tight passages as conditions grow more demanding.
Mortenson says the training has pushed him further than expected, with 13 weeks remaining in the program.
