Fort McCoy’s Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) Fire Department dive team conducted its February ice-rescue training on Big Sandy Lake, South Post, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. Taking advantage of good ice, the team practiced ice diving and lost-diver rescue scenarios, with divers tethered to a surface tender and wearing dry suits and full-face masks. Dive team member Brian Butzler described the session as an annual drill, expanding the toolbox with different dives and scenarios to stay prepared for ice and ice-recovery emergencies. The Fort McCoy dive team is a unique Army asset that has supported local communities through mutual aid across state lines. During the drill, divers worked to depths up to 25 feet and relied on underwater communications to coordinate rescues. The exercise emphasized realism and ongoing readiness as part of Fort McCoy’s broader mission as the Army’s Total Force Training Center. It showcased community impact.
