Berkshire County firefighters joined colleagues from across Massachusetts this week as the state’s Massachusetts Firefighting Academy celebrated 45 recruits who completed the 50-day Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program. The graduation ceremony highlighted students from both the S44 class in Springfield and BW38 in Bridgewater, with six Berkshire County firefighters among the graduates. Graduating from S44 were Shamus Gaherty of Monterey; Broc Healey, Carolina Jones, and Scott Matteson Jr. from Pittsfield; and Paul Hernandez and Michael Meagher of Stockbridge. The BW38 cohort included graduates from a range of departments in Bourne, Braintree, Cohasset, Duxbury, Fall River, Hanover, Harwich, Kingston, Milton, North Attleboro, Provincetown, Rockland and Scituate. MFA instructors emphasized the year-long preparation, safety focus, and NFPA standards that ensure recruits reach Firefighter I/II and Hazardous Materials First Responder levels. State Fire Marshal Jon Davine praised the graduates for their readiness to serve communities and mutual aid efforts.
