Thirty-two people earned Level One Firefighter certifications at the Ventura Training Center, including 15 formerly incarcerated firefighters and 17 California Conservation Corps members. The Dec. 19 ceremony showcased an 18-month program that combines classroom instruction with hands-on training in wildland suppression, pump operations, hose lays, and vehicle/structure fire scenarios. The Ventura Center, opened in 2018 through a partnership among CDCR, CAL FIRE, CCC and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, trains fire crews who served in fire camps or institutional firehouses, with portions open to CCC members. Attendees included CDCR and CAL FIRE leaders, CCC executives, and program organizers; Division of Adult Parole Operations Director Brian Bishop spoke about accountability and belonging to something bigger. Since 2018, about 210 paroled graduates have completed the program, with more than half now employed full-time in firefighting roles. When the 2026 fire season opens in March, these graduates will be among the most qualified applicants.
